Web
Most classes at NAU have some sort of web component . That is,
some portion of the class -syllabus, assignment list, chat room, discussion
boards, required reading materials, etc. -takes place on the web. These classes
are web-enhanced, but do not have a specific delivery method designation. When
you search for classes you will see in the class notes details about which
parts of the class are online. Web-enhanced classes are different from web
classes.
Web classes come in two main types: web-based and webcast.
Most online classes are web-based, that is the class 'lectures' and assignments
are delivered through the Internet. Instructors work with designers and
technicians at NAU to adapt a class to the web format. When you sign up for a
web class you will get the URL or Internet 'class site' of the
class. Information on the website will tell you how to progress through the
class and what will be expected of you.
In a webcast class, you watch a "live" version of the class or a video delay of
a previously taught class on your computer and follow the lectures and
assignments at the same time, all via the web.
Being a successful web class student includes accessing a
computer that is
powerful and fast enough to allow you to keep up with discussions and
assignments, taking responsibility for contacting your instructor and making
steady progress through the class, and keeping up with deadlines and
requirements. NAU hosts many student computer labs around the state. Find the
one closest to you.
You will also want to learn about
Web Course Tools (WebCT), the program that hosts most web classes at
NAU. Visit the Distance Learning New
Student Orientation and the WebCT
introductory pages to help you decide whether a web class is right for you.
