Taking a class online is a
flexible alternative to in-person classes; however, students are often hesitant
about starting a class in a format with which they are unfamiliar. Select "Next" for an overview.
Frequently Asked Questions about Online Classes:
How do I communicate with my instructor?
Use the Distance Learning Class Search Faculty Search or the NAU Phone Directory to find your instructor's email address. If one is not available, contact your advisor or the Distance Learning Service Center. It is important to e-mail your instructor as soon as you have enrolled in the class. Just enrolling in the class will not necessarily grant you access. For classes using Web Course Tools (Vista), the instructor must "open the door" of the class for you to access it.
Once the class begins, you will contact your instructor via email and discussion boards within the class.
Are books required?
Most online classes do require books; however, it is up to the instructor to decide on course materials. Check out the NAU Bookstore website for more information.
What if I need technical support?
Troubleshooting a problem on your computer can be a frustrating process. The Academic Computing Help Desk can help make this experience less frustrating. Before you call them here are a few things you can do to make life easier for you and the person manning the Help Desk:
- Know your user name.
- Have your computer turned on!
- Know what operating system your computer uses; i.e., Mac OS, Windows 98, etc.
- Be ready to describe the specific problem. Explain any error messages you have read, what software has the problem, and any other information to best describe the problem.
- Understand that NAU supports only specific software and operating systems. If you are having a problem with an unsupported software, the Academic Computing Help Desk may not be able to help you.
