Frequently Asked Questions
How long will it take to complete my degree?
Degree completion depends on many factors, including how many credits you transfer in and how many courses you take each semester. Work closely with your advisor to create a schedule that meets your needs and is manageable for you.
How much does NAU cost?

The class I need is full. What do I do?
If the class you want is offered on-site, contact that site. For instance, if a course you would like to enroll in is being offered at the Paradise Valley site, you will need to contact Paradise Valley directly. If the course you want is online, contact the instructor of the course. Email is best in this instance. You can find an instructor's email address in the NAU directory or by clicking on the instructor's name, which is highlighted in blue, in the class schedule in LOUIE. Once you have received permission to enroll (override), contact your advisor to process the enrollment.
When will my transcripts be evaluated?
Transcript evaluations vary depending on the time of year and the volume of applications at admissions. In addition, official transcripts can take up to six weeks to arrive at NAU. Once received, the transcripts will be processed as quickly as possible. You can check for your evaluation in LOUIE under Academics, View Transfer Credit Report.
How do I know when I'm admitted to NAU?
See the How do I apply? section of this orientation.
Can I receive Financial Aid for summer courses?
All financial questions should be directed to the Financial Aid office. You may email loan questions to Loans@nau.edu or call (928) 523-4951.
How do I contact my instructor?
For web courses: Use the Distance Learning Class Search or the Faculty Search or the NAU Phone Directory to find your instructor's email address. If one is not available, contact your advisor or the Distance Learning Service Center. It is important to e-mail your instructor as soon as you have enrolled in the class. Just enrolling in the class will not necessarily grant you access. For classes using Web Course Tools (Vista), the instructor must "open the door" of the class for you to access it.
For face-to-face or VC courses: Use the NAU online directory at NAU Phone Directory or contact your local site.
How do I get my transcripts?
To order an official NAU transcript, use the forms link to locate and download the Transcript Request Form. The cost for each official transcript is $6.00. Please refer to the transcript request form for the costs of optional "Rush" and "FedEx" services. Your completed form can be faxed in, mailed in or submitted in person at the registration window in the Gammage Building. The fax number and mailing address are listed on the form. Please note that only official transcripts are mailed. Transcripts sent to the student will be individually sealed. If the student opens a transcript envelope, it becomes unofficial.
You may also print out an unofficial transcript from LOUIE.
How do I get an NAU ID card?

If you want your photograph included on your NAU Card, you must
download the form (above), print it and include a photocopy of your drivers license along with a photo. The photo should be at least 1 inch wide by 1-1/2 inches tall and have a light background. Your NAUCard will be sent to you in approximately two weeks (or one week using the online form), or after your registration is complete and your fees are paid.
Where can I find the NAU catalog?
The NAU catalog is only available online. NAU does not issue a printed copy. Access the Catalog.
I am an online student. Why can't I have a local advisor? Why is my advisor in Flagstaff?
NAU Distance Learning offers over 70 degrees. As such, advisors cannot be experts on each degree. Therefore, all online degrees are advised out of the central service center. This allows advisors at NAU sites to concentrate on programs offered locally. Advisement out of the central service center is thorough and accurate. In addition, with advisors on staff Monday through Saturday, responses are timely and advisor availability increased.
My Degree Audit seems incorrect. What do I do?
If you believe your Degree Audit report is incorrect, please contact your advisor. He or she can contact the appropriate department to make changes and updates.
How do I access my web class?
Follow these steps to access your class:
--Go to the NAU Distance Learning homepage.
--Locate the Quick Links menu on the far right of the home page.
--Select View Web Classes.
--Select the proper term in the drop down menu. (Scroll down to view the list of online classes for the term selected.)
--Click on your course. (If the link appears to be broken, please contact your instructor directly or call the Academic Computing Help Desk at (928) 523-9294 or (888) 520-7215.)
Many web courses require a login and password. If your web course is being delivered using Vista, you will use your NAU email/LOUIE account username and password to log in. Create a bookmark for the Vista log-in page or save it in your Favorites.
Courses not delivered using Vista, may have login and passwords that are set by the instructor. You will need to contact the instructor directly for this information or wait for an email from your instructor for further direction. Some courses may require an access code the first time you log into the course. If your class requires an access code, please contact your instructor for information.
You may not be able to log into Vista until your instructor uploads the roster for your course. Some instructors will not do this until the first day of the term, or later. If you are able to log into Vista, but do not see your course listed, this is also because the roster has not been uploaded. Please contact your instructor
How do I access the Internet?
If you do not have an Internet connection, or you do not know how to obtain an Internet connection, contact NAU's Academic Computing Help Desk at (888) 520-7215 or via email at help@dana.ucc.nau.edu.
When connecting to the Internet from home, you may choose to use NAU as your provider. For a directory of NAU's Statewide dial-up numbers, visit the ITS website or ask the Academic Computing Help Desk about NAU's modem pool.
You may also use a computer at one of the Statewide computer labs; a directory of the labs can be found on the Distance Learning website.
