Enrolling in Class

Whether you are taking classes for personal interest or working toward a degree, there are five main steps to enrolling in a class. Refer to the printable enrollment checklist for a more detailed listing.

First you need to apply and be admitted to the university. Apply online, by mail or in person using the form appropriate for your academic career. Your career is either undergraduate or graduate depending on which level of classes or degree program you will enroll in.

Second, find an advisor in your program of study. Discuss your education goals and class selection.

Third, set up your NAU email account. This account will be necessary to view grades, enroll in classes, and receive important notices about payment and other items.

Fourth, check the calendar for deadlines. There are enrollment deadlines and payment deadlines that you need to keep track of. The applicable deadlines are based on the term, session and start date of your class. As you search for classes, make a point of printing or storing this information whenever possible. If you miss deadlines you may have to submit additional paperwork and/or you will incur additional expenses.

Fifth, once you've been admitted you can select your classes and enroll. Use the Distance Learning class search to find classes by campus, instructor, subject, or keyword. Enroll online , by mail, or in person. Drop and add classes until you get your schedule just right. Make sure you print or store your final schedule as this is your receipt and you will not receive a confirmation of your enrollment.

Sixth, when your class schedule is settled, remember to pay (e-check, check, credit card) or make arrangements for payment (financial aid, scholarships, payment plan, promissory note, or third party billing).

Finally, you should take care of housekeeping details for your class, such as finding out where the class will be held. The Distance Learning class search lets you create a map to your classsite or your local NAU campus can help with directions to your class location. You'll also need to order books for your class and see if there are any pre-class assignments.

Now you are ready to go to class!
